Where do the Igi nor Amos stories come from?

The origin of many Igi nor Amos stories is lost in the mist of time, simply being jokes and funny stories told by Piet Frans over many years.

There are others, however, where the specific source can still be accurately pinpointed.  One such is cartoon nr.30, which comes from a wonderful story once told by a visitor to “The Red Chair” on the BBC’s “Graham Norton Show.”

Here it is, and  when you’ve had a look, there are also two Weekend Challenge questions….

Lost in translation…

QUESTION 1:  Who do you think was the inspiration for the fierce French mechanic in the final panel?

QUESTION 2:  Two rural cafes are depicted in the cartoon.  The first is a random image, but the second is one which Piet Frans visited a few times.  Where is it?  (clue: it isn’t in Provence, and it is a place related to South Africa and World War 1)

Incidentally- in real life Piet Frans also ran into language trouble at that Calypso Cafe. Asking directions from the French-speaking barman, he ran out of French vocabulary, and ended up snapping his fingers while lamenting aloud, “Oh what’s that f@*#ing word again!”
